WHY YOU SHOULD EAT OATS & FRUIT Oatmeal: research shows beta-glucan in oats has possible cholesterol lowering and anti diabetic effects. Cardiovascular disease & type 2 diabetes are the top disease and mortality burdens worldwide. Grains are high in fibre which the gut microbiome thrives on. Good bacteria help digest food, support immunity and lower inflammation. I can always tell when people eat grain free when I see their GI-MAP because they have such low commensal bacteria. Consumption of oats significantly increased Akkermansia muciniphila & Roseburia bacteria. Oats are a great prebiotic food to help feed your good bacteria so eat up. I like steel cut for a bowl of oats and old fashion in baking. PMID 34828872 34444718 344956218 FRUIT: I find it odd people avoid fruit, but drink sugary alcohol or drink pop. Sorry, but fruit is loaded with benefits from fibre to vitamins and polyphenols (maybe you’ve heard of anthocyanins?). Polyphenols have antioxidant & anti-inflammatory properties. Fruit help prevent constipation, IBS, IBD, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, lowering the risk of depression, supports higher bone density & more. Whole fruits are ideal versus juice due to delayed gastric emptying (thanks fibre!). Don’t fear sugar in fruit! My client today said he was happily surprised that me, a nutritionist, helped him more than any other health practitioner. Pretty neat, but also how the heck does one communicate this to other potential clients. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I truly think it’s because of all the time I spend in the background without the client writing a plan. Unlike naturopaths, I’m not seeing 10 plus clients a day back to back and just giving them a piece of paper with notes I write during the appointment. My protocols last 8-12 weeks too! My client said if only he knew to book with me prior! He has no more bloating, constipation , a faster transit time and he’s eating a bigger variety of foods with no reaction!! He had low good bacteria levels, an inflammatory bad bacteria linked to autoimmunity and a parasite. We made so much progress only 2 months!!! Acid reflux can occur when stomach acid is high or low. It’s often assumed in allopathic medicine it’s always high and PPIs are given. You definitely don’t want reflux because it’s uncomfortable, but long term it can lead to esophageal damage and cellular changes. The majority of my clients actually have LOW stomach acid. I wrote an article about navigating acid reflux - comment REFLUX and I’ll send it over. 1. CHRONIC STRESS I’m talking long term stress in which the gut brain connection is impacted. Your nervous system plays a role in your digestive function and if digestive juices are flowing. This isn’t your everyday healthy stress. 2. H PYLORI Note that you have to have very high levels to test positive in western medicine because they give you 4 antibiotics and a PPI. It takes a toll on the body. Only 3 of my clients tested high with their doc, BUT countless have tested high on the stool test I offer because it actually tells you a number (not just yes or no, there’s a range). Morale of the story, support the person and their symptoms. How do I know it worked? Their reflux goes away and it’s negative on a re-test 3. LOW MINERALS Minerals are required to make stomach acid! Zinc, sodium and potassium are the three I focus on. These are best measured in tissue such as hair as that’s where the majority of minerals are stored. Low sodium: feeling dehydrated, overwhelmed, anxious, craving salty foods Low potassium: constipation or slower transit time common Zinc: immunity and hormone connection Which foods to eat? I made a yummy green smoothie on a clear Fall day with lots of diversity, veggies and greens for energy. I personally don’t make iced smoothies in the cooler months.
