I just realized that Iâve never shared Tennies story on tiktokâ so here we are. February 1st our world turned upside down. Our baby was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The warning signs were there but the warning signs mimic a lot of other symptoms and also who automatically thinks, diabetes when there kid seems off? I knew nothing about this disease but luckily I was vocal about what I was seeing with her and my concerns and a good friend/cousin (who is also a nurse) thought to say, âthats a symptom of type 1 diabetes.â As soon as I googled I knew thatâs what it was. I text our pediatrician and we went in for blood work the next morning. Sure enough her blood sugar was at 469 and we were sent straight to ICU at the childrenâs hospital. When we got there her A1C was 12.6 and she was in ketoacidosis. We were later told that we were hours away from a diabetic coma. It was the scariest and worst 24 hours of my life. Watching your child lay there, so out of it being poked and prodded and hungry is an absolute nightmare. I write all of this because I want to share with you the symptoms so that you are aware. I just wish I had knownâ- I knew something was off but blood sugar was not at all on my radar. We have struggled with Tennies behavior for a while now. Extreme fits. Not just fits but extreme. To the point where I had said to Mitch itâs as if she had no control over it. Turns out she didnât. This went on for a long time so I know her sugar has been out of whack for a while. Then for about a month I noticed she was peeing a lot in the night. She has always done this so I initially didnât think much of it but then I was like this is more extreme than usual. Then I noticed she seemed off⊠just sluggish and not herself. I had even mentioned to Mitch and her teacher that I was going to ask her Dr. to do some blood work. When Iâd ask her if she felt okay sheâd say, âyeah, Iâm just tired.â Obviously a four year old doesnât know how to communicate that she just doesnât feel right. She wasnât sleeping well. Waking up multiple times in the night and guzzling water. Her skin looked blotchy and her body looked malnourished. It all seems like things that youâd think you would just notice but they were little things. I had noticed sheâd lost weight but sheâd also gotten taller so I thought maybe itâs just a growth spurt. Luckily, we had a few snow days and we were home together where I could watch her all day long. Iâm forever grateful that God helped us see it and get her to the doctor in time but it was a close call. And after researching, most type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in the ER when kids are already in ketoacidosis. It is scary and dangerous. I want to share our experience in hope that it may help someone else recognize the signs sooner rather than later. If you notice these things in your kiddo donât put it off. Getting checked out doesnât hurt anything. Itâs been a wild couple of months. Weâre tired and overwhelmed. Weâve learned that diabetes is a full time job. Now not only are we Tennies parents but we are also her pancreas. Itâs an emotional weight that I canât explain and while yes, it is and will become our new normalâ there is nothing normal about it. Itâs hard. There are SO many factors and every day is literally a new day with how her body will react to things. T1D is so much more than I ever realized. #t1d #type1diabetes #t1dmom #type1warrior
