Regaining financial independence in time for my husbandās 46th birthday was not in the list of things I imagined would happen this year. Taking him on a trip to Madrid isnāt something he wouldāve agreed to let me organize and itās certainly not something I couldāve managed on a candle-makerās salary. It might seem trivial but my husband is the kindest and most supportive partner someone could wish for. Heās supported every hair brain idea Iāve had for the past decade, full force. Heās given me the space to become whole again after giving up my career and becoming a mom. So every year, when his birthday rolls around, I scramble to come up with something thoughtful enough to match the love that he gives me. It always comes out of the ājoint accountā which we both know is there thanks to his earnings. I know itās more nuanced than that and that being home with the kids gave him the space and time to earn for us but when youāre financially dependent on your partner, it really affects your self-worth. Life is funny, a simple reel changed the trajectory of my work this year, and now means I can treat my husband to the thing he loves most: traveling and discovering new places. Feeling free.
