I just realized that Iāve never shared Tennies story on tiktokā so here we are. February 1st our world turned upside down. Our baby was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The warning signs were there but the warning signs mimic a lot of other symptoms and also who automatically thinks, diabetes when there kid seems off? I knew nothing about this disease but luckily I was vocal about what I was seeing with her and my concerns and a good friend/cousin (who is also a nurse) thought to say, āthats a symptom of type 1 diabetes.ā As soon as I googled I knew thatās what it was. I text our pediatrician and we went in for blood work the next morning. Sure enough her blood sugar was at 469 and we were sent straight to ICU at the childrenās hospital. When we got there her A1C was 12.6 and she was in ketoacidosis. We were later told that we were hours away from a diabetic coma. It was the scariest and worst 24 hours of my life. Watching your child lay there, so out of it being poked and prodded and hungry is an absolute nightmare. I write all of this because I want to share with you the symptoms so that you are aware. I just wish I had knownā- I knew something was off but blood sugar was not at all on my radar. We have struggled with Tennies behavior for a while now. Extreme fits. Not just fits but extreme. To the point where I had said to Mitch itās as if she had no control over it. Turns out she didnāt. This went on for a long time so I know her sugar has been out of whack for a while. Then for about a month I noticed she was peeing a lot in the night. She has always done this so I initially didnāt think much of it but then I was like this is more extreme than usual. Then I noticed she seemed off⦠just sluggish and not herself. I had even mentioned to Mitch and her teacher that I was going to ask her Dr. to do some blood work. When Iād ask her if she felt okay sheād say, āyeah, Iām just tired.ā Obviously a four year old doesnāt know how to communicate that she just doesnāt feel right. She wasnāt sleeping well. Waking up multiple times in the night and guzzling water. Her skin looked blotchy and her body looked malnourished. It all seems like things that youād think you would just notice but they were little things. I had noticed sheād lost weight but sheād also gotten taller so I thought maybe itās just a growth spurt. Luckily, we had a few snow days and we were home together where I could watch her all day long. Iām forever grateful that God helped us see it and get her to the doctor in time but it was a close call. And after researching, most type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in the ER when kids are already in ketoacidosis. It is scary and dangerous. I want to share our experience in hope that it may help someone else recognize the signs sooner rather than later. If you notice these things in your kiddo donāt put it off. Getting checked out doesnāt hurt anything. Itās been a wild couple of months. Weāre tired and overwhelmed. Weāve learned that diabetes is a full time job. Now not only are we Tennies parents but we are also her pancreas. Itās an emotional weight that I canāt explain and while yes, it is and will become our new normalā there is nothing normal about it. Itās hard. There are SO many factors and every day is literally a new day with how her body will react to things. T1D is so much more than I ever realized. #t1d #type1diabetes #t1dmom #type1warrior
Every doctor has given me the same story as written from my hospital records. I understand that standard protocol for incompetent cervix diagnosis after a failed emergency cerclage is a prophylactic transvaginal cerclage. For the next pregnancy, Iām NOT looking to wait and see if another loss happens with a TVC. Iām taking matters into my own hands to find a TAC (transabdominal cerclage) surgeon who will look at my case and help me decide what the BEST option is for me. #incompetentcervix #pregnancy #stillborn #cerclage #pretermlabor

I was diagnosed with bipolar 2 seven years ago and for 5 years I didnāt know what that meant or how to treat it. I was in and out of mental health hospitals and programs working with doctors that prescribed me what they perceived would work, and then I finally landed on the medication that worked for me after trying all the options, and finding the courage to speak up and say what was working for my mind and body. Since then, thanks to God being with me every step of the way, I havenāt had a single āincident.ā I promised myself during those times that I would live for me when that season of my life passed. Now that it has, I still find it hard to go all out for what I want, but Iāve decided to take a full step towards what makes me happy which I have hope will lead me closer to my purpose.
These last four years have been very traumatic. From having a baby, then 6 months later getting diagnosed with an aggressive form of thyroid cancer, to having major surgery right after her first birthday with a debilitating fear of being put to sleep and not waking up, to having a bad reaction to waking up and that was traumatic. Multiple rounds of radiation to make sure nothing was left behind. Yearly petscans to make sure itās staying gone. Having blood work done every 3 months for the rest of my life by multiple doctors to make sure itās staying gone and to monitor my autoimmune diseases. To being diagnosed with hashimotos, lupus, alopecia, PCOS, and a gene mutation that basically makes it harder for my body to fight off cancer. Then needed a partial hysterectomy because I have endometriosis, a very high risk of uterine cancer and then they find adenomyosis after the hysterectomy. To having heart problems and being diagnosed with pots and CAD. Also being diagnosed as insulin resistant and pre diabetic because of your PCOS. The list just goes on and on. Yearly mammograms because Iām at a severely high risk for breast cancer. Ultrasounds of my ovaries every 6 months because of my PCOS and high risk for ovarian cancer because my doctor wouldnāt listen and just take those out as well. I have endured so much medical trauma in 5 years itās unreal. But Iām still here. Iām still fighting. Some days I really want to give up. But I canāt. I have two daughters watching me, looking up to me that I have to find the strength for. If youāre struggling too I see you! You are safe here and youāre never alone! I am proud of you and I love you š¤š«¶#fyp #chronicillness #medicaltrauma #lupuswarrior #thyroidcancer
Obsessed with the Picosure Pro laser by @Cynosurelutronic! I first tried it in Korea this summer and loved it. My doctor recommended more sessions for best results, so I visited @Dr. Walter Joseph back home in LA. With numbing cream, itās relatively pain-free and thereās very little downtime. My skin was red for a few hours after but it looked pretty normal the next day. Itās common for dark spots to appear darker for the first few days while the pigment works its way out. Within a few weeks, skin looks brighter and more even. Itās an incredible treatment for stimulating collagen and elastin production. AND for the melasma girlies out there, itās the only picosecond device cleared to treat melasma pigment. Any questions? #cynosurelutronicpartner #picosure #hyperpigmentation #melasma
Today felt like a victory I didnāt expect. For over 2 years, I couldnāt take off my wedding bands ā inflammation made it impossible. God is so good! Iām a part of the 3% of black women holding a doctoral degeee in the U.S. Iāve been busy the last 4 years. Iām super grateful.
This year has been a DOOZY so much going on between moving multiple times, family business, parenting a toddler while pregnant. This pregnancy was definitely different than my first - I was super nauseous for a lot longer and couldnāt just nap it off like my first pregnancy since I have a 3 foot tall mini me to watch over. However, physically I overall felt SO much better this pregnancy - moving a lot more, even worked out almost until the end. Maybe itās because I knew what to expect more this time or was more calm but I felt like baby boy was also happy and content inside so I wasnāt as anxious in that sense. With my first pregnancy I gained about 60-62lbs š¤ this pregnancy I gained just shy of 25lbs. I attempted a VBAC because all of my numbers were looking so good and I was a good candidate, but as the time came I got up to 6 cm dilated and we needed to do an emergency C-section ( same as with my daughter three years ago ). While itās not the birth outcome that I plan for Iām grateful for the doctors for making the decision that they did to keep baby boy and I healthy and Iām honestly so impressed by how fast the recovery has been this go around and how great I feel 2 weeks after such an intense surgery. In four weeks from now, I go to the doctor to get cleared to work out and Iām excited to get back into a routine šāāļøš¤š½ if anyone has any pelvic floor workouts or tips Iām all ears! #csection #csectionrecovery #csectionmom #postpartum #mumsoftiktok

Weight loss is hard for everyone but especially for moms who have ZERO time to make it happen, it can seem impossible. I know thereās a vibe out there that GLP-1s are āshortcutsā but Iāve found that you still need to put in the work. Itās not gonna grow the muscle for you. Itās not going to fuel your body for you. But itās an amazing medication that can be a tool in your journey and help get things moving more quickly. I went with @tryshed because they have you talk to a real doctor and are transparent about exactly what youāre getting. I was nervous about the injection aspect for a minute but itās truly NOTHING and they also have other options with no injection, if youād prefer. So happy to chat about my experience if youāve been considering trying one, I did a ton of research and have been really pleased with how quickly Iām seeing results and the whole experience with Shed. We have to be our own advocate ladies, especially if youāre under 40. I went to a doctor over a year ago with my complaints and SHE ignored them. Recently got a second opinion and he immediately sent me through all the testing I needed.
Iāll never forget what it felt like to sit in a doctorās office, listing every symptom, only to be told āthatās normal.ā Itās such a specific kind of heartbreak to know somethingās off in your body, but not be believed.
