Religious trauma isnât just emotionalâitâs physiological. The culture we grow up in shapes our nervous system, our identity, and our sense of safety in the world. When that culture is rooted in high-control religion, it often teaches people to disconnect from their bodies, override their instincts, and silence their inner knowing in favor of obedience. In my Utah-based therapy practice, I see the impact of this every day. Chronic anxiety. Shame woven into identity. Difficulty trusting joy. Feeling unsafe in rest. People blaming themselves for trauma they never consented to. Religious trauma doesnât always look like a single eventâitâs often a series of subtle (and not-so-subtle) messages that slowly erode a personâs sense of autonomy, safety, and worth. Pack EVERYTHING out â€”ïž Letâs talk about how to be a responsible hiker during larch season AND a government shutdown⊠When park staff and rangers arenât around, itâs on us all to step up and protect the places we love. Hereâs how to do your part during a government shutdown (and during the ongoing staff shortage): đČ Leave No Trace (Always) â Just because no oneâs watching doesnât mean the rules disappear. Stay on trail, camp in established areas, and pack out everything, including toilet paper. đ Pack it out (for real) â With trash services limited or paused, whatever you bring in, you must bring out. If you see someone elseâs litter, pack that out too. It sucks to pick up others trash but itâs a small action that makes a difference and models the right behavior. đ„ Skip the campfires â Fire bans and permits might not be actively enforced, but that doesnât mean itâs safe to burn. Use a stove instead and help prevent wildfires. đœ Handle waste properly â Restrooms may be locked or unmaintained. Dig proper catholes (6â8 inches deep, 200 feet from water) or pack it out with a WAG bag. đŁ Speak up (if you feel safe to do so) â If you see others breaking rules or damaging fragile areas, a friendly reminder can go a long way. Most people just donât know better. đ« Respect permits and quotas â Even if enforcement is paused, those systems exist to protect fragile ecosystems and limit overuse. If you didnât get a permit, save it for another time. đ« Respect closures â If areas are officially closed, donât go. Fragile ecosystems and infrastructure can easily be damaged without oversight.
